The past few years have seen McGill's business school gain a new dean, Peter Todd, and a new name, the Desautels Faculty of Management, after a $22-million donation from Marcel Desautels, CEO of the Canadian Credit Management Foundation. In 2008, the school will implement an overhauled curriculum, the latest step in its evolution. The revised program condenses the core curriculum into one semester, putting emphasis on professional development and real-world experience, while allowing students to concentrate on specialized topics earlier in their studies. Classes are conducted in English, but students can complete assignments and exams in French.
With its Ivy League feel, well-regarded faculty and high name recognition, both in Canada and abroad, McGill draws big-name guest speakers on a regular basis, including astronaut Marc Garneau, World Anti-Doping Agency chair Dick Pound, and Justice John Gomery of Liberal sponsorship scandal fame.
Clubby traditions like rugby and soccer matches against Harvard and Duke burnish that reputation. The school boasts strong ties to corporate Canada, and faculty and alumni networking events are common. Close to everything in the country's most cosmopolitan city, Desautels students have lots to do right on their doorstep. But for those looking for something a little further afield, options abound: about a quarter of McGill MBA students go on exchanges in their second year, jetting off to partner universities on every continent. Next September, McGill will launch its first executive MBA as a joint degree with neighouring HEC Montréal.
