With a new hand on the tiller, Dalhousie is poised to make some changes in 2008. Dean David Wheeler, formerly the sustainable-business guru at Toronto's Schulich School of Business, was installed in the top spot last year with a mandate to "reimagine" business education at Dal. "It's very easy to put on a couple of electives in corporate social responsibility or sustainability," says Wheeler. "It takes a lot of effort to actually integrate it into the program. This is the kind of thinking I was brought in to promote." While the details are still being hammered out, the changes will focus on more interdisciplinary learning and embrace pressing topics like climate change and global security.
Dalhousie's MBA celebrated its 40th anniversary in September, and got a facelift in 2005 with a new building, housing all five of its management programs together for the first time. Located in the heart of Halifax's hip downtown, students are never far from the city's legendary pub and jazz-bar district, and the region's beaches, lakes and golf courses tempt with more ways to depressurize.
Offering joint MBAs in engineering, health services, law and library sciences, students can prepare for a variety of careers, and help such as networking events with Dalhousie alumni are held in Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver and Calgary. A friendly campus vibe inspires high extracurricular involvement, as students take part in mock business-plan competitions, potluck dinners and charity drives.
