The Chartered Institute of Marketing recently won approval to offer chartered marketer status to members who fulfill a number of criteria. To achieve chartered marketer status you need to be a full member of the chartered institute of marketing (CIM) and have completed at least two years of documented career development. This takes the form of activites such as learning a language, writing articles, undertaking further training, contributing to branch activities Full details on qualifying activities can be found below.
The acceptance of Chartered Marketer status so far seems to be luke warm. The CIM are pushing it fairly hard (while trying to maintain fairly strict entry requirements) but the outside world seems fairly indifferent. During the period 1 July - 30 Sept 2000 the qualification was not mentioned in any marketing job ad in the major national news papers or marketing press. Uptake by CIM members and graduates also seems fairly low outside of the committed branch membership.
While Chartered status in jobs such as accountancy is a ticket to increased earnings, chartered marketer status still has a long way to go
